It all started on a hot summer day in July 2015 in Brooklyn, New York. Chelsea had just returned home after spending her final semester of college studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, while Naquan was settling into his first year of corporate life.
By chance, they both attended a party hosted by their respective Greek organizations—Chelsea, an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. member, and Naquan, a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The venue was packed and the summer heat was almost unbearable. In search of a little relief, Chelsea made her way to the only large fan in the room, which just so happened to be near the Sigmas. Standing there was Naquan.
What began as a simple conversation quickly turned into an entire evening spent talking, laughing, and dancing together. From that very first meeting, an effortless friendship blossomed. There was an undeniable comfort between them, as if they had known each other for years. Neither of them knew it then, but that chance encounter by a fan on a sweltering summer day would become the beginning of a beautiful love story.
Naquan proposed to Chelsea on November 13, 2025, in Harlem, surrounded by both of their families. The proposal came just one day before they were set to leave for Cabo to celebrate another year of their relationship. What was meant to be an anniversary trip, quickly became a celebration of their future together and the beginning of their next chapter.
They will be married on June 17, 2027, at the start of Juneteenth weekend, a date that holds special meaning for them both. As proud African Americans, they wanted their wedding to take place during a time that represents joy, culture, and community. Throughout their relationship, they have shared countless laughs, unforgettable memories, and even a few mutual friendships - a reminder of just how small the world can be.
As they begin this new journey together, they look forward to creating many more memories and building a lifetime filled with love, laughter, purpose, and R&B!
